Judges' Comments

Carmelite’s design of a 5 level, vertically integrated retirement living and a residential aged care facility has allowed Southern Cross to follow an “Aging in Place” philosophy. Difficult site constraints including regulated trees, main road setbacks and the requirement for significant stormwater infrastructure, have been successfully addressed.

Co-located with significant heritage buildings, the result is a striking monumental form segmented by selected stone facing, which is contrasted by a dark colour palette. Orientated to allow residents to enjoy both city and coastal vistas and its attractive eastern suburbs location, has resulted in high demand for both types of accommodation. The judges were particularly impressed by the apartment designs and spacious and well-furnished hallways and facilities.

Carmelite’s decision to combine both forms of seniors’ living has provided security and a sense of independence whilst maintaining access to residential aged care services when needed.

Carmelite has presented the opportunity to successfully realise the Southern Cross Care concept of “Better for Life”.
